People in the Streets - Discussion About the Situation in Arab Countries

The wave of revolt that has led to changes in some autocratic Arab countries first began about a year ago in Tunisia.

People in The Streets is an opportunity to hear scholars and experts native of the region discuss the events that have taken place in those countries during the past year, what is going on at the moment, and what it all may lead to in the future.

People In the Streets

The Studio, Turku Main Library, Thursday, February 23rd, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Linnankatu 2

Louis Clercin, Senior lecturer and scholar in Political History at Turku University, leads a discussion with the following participants (among others):

  • Mohammed Ahmedane (Egypt), Turun islamilainen yhdistys (The Islamic Association in Turku)
  • Saana-Maria Jokinen, journalist
  • Hanna Nikkanen, journalist / writer
  • Heidi Tuohisuo, Amnesty International

The program also includes Syrian music and a summary of the situation in Arab countries by Amnesty International.

Also relating to the subject, an exhibitition with works by the Syrian cartoonist
Ali Ferzatis on display at the Main Library. 

The event is arranged jointly by the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Unit at the City of Turku Cultural Services and the Turku City Library.
