The City of Turku has now a wide-ranging Architectural Policy Programme. The programme which has been prepared by the Environmental and City Planning Department was approved by the City Council in February this year. The programme includes outlines and advice concerning future construction, planning as well as control of quality. The central theme of the Architectural Policy Programme is the combination of old and new architecture. Turku is believed to become an exemplary city of complementary construction where also brave and forerunning solutions will be supported. Other significant themes in the programme are e.g. the city identity, the city image, the built heritage, art, educational architecture, research as well as information and interaction. Five current top projects - including the Bryggman InstituteThe most current top projects are listed in the programme. These are, for example, the National Urban Park which includes the city's valuable areas and the building heritage programme in which the principles of preserving the built environment in Turku are defined. The development of methods for competition and the alienation of sites as well as the establishment of the Bryggman Institute which focuses on education in architecture are also listed as top projects. An important aspect is that Turku, after a long period of time, would establish again a position for a city architect.
